This spicy coriander chutney, also known as kothamalli thogayal, is bold, earthy, and packed with flavor. It’s not your regular watery chutney. This one is thick, intense, and meant to be mixed with hot rice or paired with tiffin.
One spoon, a drizzle of sesame oil, and you’ve got comfort food sorted.
What makes Coriander Chutney (kothamalli thogayal) special
This is a traditional South Indian chutney that’s
Thick and coarse in texture
Spicy and deeply roasted in flavor
Made for rice, not just dipping
Long lasting compared to regular chutneys
Unlike coconut chutney, this one is more concentrated and robust, making it perfect for busy days.
Taste and texture you’ll notice instantly
Here’s what makes it addictive
Nutty crunch from dals
Bold heat from red and green chillies
Earthy freshness from coriander leaves
Tangy depth from tamarind
Richness from coconut and sesame oil
It’s the kind of chutney that wakes up your taste buds.
Ingredient breakdown and why each one matters
Let’s simplify
Coriander leaves The star ingredient that gives freshness and aroma
Chana dal and urad dal Adds body, nuttiness, and thickness
Garlic Brings sharpness and depth
Coconut bits Balances spice and adds richness
Tamarind Gives that essential tang
Sesame oil Enhances flavor and helps preserve the chutney
How does this chutney come together in your kitchen
Start by heating sesame oil in a pan. Add chana dal and urad dal and roast them patiently until they turn golden and aromatic.
Next, add cumin seeds followed by red chillies and green chillies. Let them roast just enough to release their heat and flavor.
Now toss in garlic cloves and coconut bits. As they sauté, your kitchen will start smelling incredible.
Add tamarind pieces, and finally throw in fresh coriander leaves. You’ll notice them wilting quickly. That’s exactly what you want.
Add salt and a pinch of hing, give everything a good mix, and switch off the flame. Let it cool completely.
Once cooled, grind it into a thick chutney using very little water. This isn’t meant to be runny, keep it dense and slightly coarse.
Finish with a quick tempering of mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli, hing, and curry leaves in hot oil. Pour it over the chutney.
That final tempering takes it to another level.
Pro Tip 💡: Always use very little water while grinding. A thick chutney lasts longer and tastes more intense
