Surat-Special Cold Cocoa is a popular chocolate drink hailing from the streets of Surat, Gujarat. It’s a rich, creamy, and refreshing summer beverage, perfect for chocolate lovers.

With just a handful of ingredients like milk, cocoa powder, and chocolate, this drink can be easily prepared at home, offering a delightful way to cool down during hot weather.

The combination of cocoa, chocolate, and a smooth, creamy texture makes it the perfect treat for a sweet tooth.

What Goes Into It

  • Milk: The base of the drink, providing a creamy and rich texture that makes the cocoa smooth and indulgent.
  • Corn Flour Slurry: Helps thicken the milk, giving the cocoa a luxurious, creamy consistency.
  • Cocoa Powder: Adds the rich, deep chocolate flavor that is essential to the drink.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the cocoa to the perfect level of indulgence, balancing the slight bitterness of the cocoa.
  • Vanilla Essence (Optional): Enhances the flavor with a subtle, sweet aroma.
  • Chocolate: Dark cooking chocolate is melted into the mix, boosting the chocolatey richness and giving it a smooth, velvety texture.

How to Make

Start by heating the milk on a medium flame in a pan, stirring occasionally to prevent it from sticking. While the milk heats, prepare the corn flour slurry by mixing 2 tbsp of corn flour with 1/4 cup of milk and set it aside.

Similarly, mix 3 tbsp of cocoa powder with another 1/4 cup of milk until smooth and free of lumps. Set the cocoa mixture aside as well.

Once the milk is hot, lower the flame and slowly add the corn flour slurry, stirring quickly to prevent any lumps from forming.

Afterward, add the smooth cocoa mixture to the milk, whisking it well until fully combined. Now, add the sugar and stir it into the mixture, keeping the flame low.

At this stage, add vanilla essence for a touch of flavor, followed by the dark chocolate.

Stir everything together until the chocolate has completely melted into the cocoa mix. Let it cook for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken to the right consistency.

Once done, turn off the stove and strain the mixture to ensure a smooth drink. Let it cool to room temperature.

Once it has cooled, pour the cocoa into a serving glass with some ice cubes for that refreshing chill.

Garnish with grated chocolate for an extra touch of indulgence.

How to Serve

Serve the Cold Cocoa in a glass or mason jar with a garnish of grated chocolate. The addition of ice cubes makes it the perfect chilled drink for hot summer days. It’s a treat for chocolate lovers and perfect for family gatherings or as a cool dessert beverage.

How to Make Ahead

Prepare the cocoa in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just serve it chilled with ice cubes when you’re ready to enjoy it. The flavors deepen and become richer as it sits.

How to Pack

For packing, transfer the cooled cocoa into a mason jar or any bottle with a tight-fitting lid. Add ice cubes just before serving. This makes for a great on-the-go treat!
