Prep Work

  1. Soak horse gram

    Rinse and soak horse gram in water for at least 8 hours or overnight.

  2. Soak rice
    Rinse and soak raw rice in water for 30 minutes.( remember for every one cup of rice use half cup of horse gram)
  3. Chop vegetables
    Finely chop onions and tomatoes. Slit green chilies. Pound garlic cloves.

Method

  1. Heat oil and ghee

    Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker.

  2. Tempering
    Add chana dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Sauté aromatics
    Add chopped onions, pounded garlic, and slit green chilies. Sauté until soft.
  4. Add spices
    Mix in salt, turmeric, chili powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Stir well.
  5. Cook tomatoes
    Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  6. Add horse gram
    Stir in soaked horse gram along with fresh curry leaves and coriander. Mix well.
  7. Add water & boil
    Pour water and bring the mixture to a boil.Adjust the salt if needed.
  8. Add rice
    Add soaked rice, stir gently, and close the cooker.
  9. Pressure cook
    Cook for 2 whistles and allow pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes and then open it.
  10. Serve
    Fluff the rice and serve hot with raita, pickle, or papad.
