Soak horse gram
Rinse and soak horse gram in water for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Soak rice
Rinse and soak raw rice in water for 30 minutes.( remember for every one cup of rice use half cup of horse gram) -
Chop vegetables
Finely chop onions and tomatoes. Slit green chilies. Pound garlic cloves.
Method

Heat oil and ghee
Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker.

Tempering
Add chana dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds. Let them splutter. -
Sauté aromatics
Add chopped onions, pounded garlic, and slit green chilies. Sauté until soft. -
Add spices
Mix in salt, turmeric, chili powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Stir well. -
Cook tomatoes
Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy. -
Add horse gram
Stir in soaked horse gram along with fresh curry leaves and coriander. Mix well. -
Add water & boil
Pour water and bring the mixture to a boil.Adjust the salt if needed. -
Add rice
Add soaked rice, stir gently, and close the cooker. -
Pressure cook
Cook for 2 whistles and allow pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes and then open it. -
Serve
Fluff the rice and serve hot with raita, pickle, or papad.
